ACTION REQUEST
To approve the rewording of the Backflow Ordinance and code.
BACKGROUND (Brief Summary)
The rewording segments are designed to improve communications between the Inspections Department, the Utilities Department, the Backflow Program Coordinator, and the customer. The amendment encompasses several important factors. Vaults have the potential to create cross-connection issues. A cross connection is a physical connection between the City's water system and a water source containing contaminating and polluting elements. Vaults have the potential to create very dangerous cross-connection scenarios. Furthermore, vaults may create dangerous work environments for maintenance workers, and vaults promote premature deterioration problems for backflow devices and other mechanical parts.
RECOMMENDATION
It is the recommendation of the Utilities and Legal departments to reword and update this ordinance.
