ACTION REQUEST

Consider and take action on Resolution No. 2023-098, confirming Landis Cravens as the Mayor's appointment to the Chief of Police and the swearing in of his new position.

BACKGROUND (Brief Summary)

Assistant Chief Landis Joseph Cravens was born and raised in Texas City.  He became a patrolman with Texas City Police Department in 1995 and has risen through the ranks and was appointed Assistant Chief of Police in February 2023.

Assistant Chief Cravens attended and graduated from the Alvin Community College Law Enforcement Academy in 1991.  He started his law enforcement career with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office in 1992 and joined the La Marque Police Department in 1993 before returning home to work for the Texas City Police Department in 1995.

Assistant Chief Cravens holds a Master Peace Officer license through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He has an Associates of Arts degree in Criminal Justice (Magna Cum Laude honors) from Alvin Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Service Leadership from the University of Houston – Clear Lake, and is currently enrolled and working towards an Executive Master's of Public Service and Administration through the Bush School at Texas A&M University. When he's not at work, you can catch him doing all things outside.  Assistant Chief Cravens is an avid outdoorsman and loves hunting, fishing, camping, and working in the garden.

RECOMMENDATION

Assistant Chief Landis Cravens is a solid individual and would positively represent the City of Texas City as the Chief of Police.  His background, experience, and education show a clear path as a leader of the Texas City Police Department which is why I am asking you to confirm my appointment for him to be the Chief of Police, effective September 1, 2023.
