ACTION REQUEST

The stretchers recommended for replacement will reach the manufacturer’s “end of service” life of fifteen (15) years in April 2024. This is an important factor in considering liability and risk related decisions such as mechanical wear, material degradation, and patient injury.

Moreover, these four stretchers will no longer be covered by the annual preventive maintenance and parts replacement program which has the potential to greatly increase stretcher maintenance costs. For example, replacement of a broken lower unit costs approximately $4,000.00. We have replaced four lower units under the annual maintenance contract at no cost.

BACKGROUND (Brief Summary)

Stretchers are one of our most often used pieces of equipment. The manufacturer has placed a service life on stretchers at 15 years, after which they will no longer provide a service plan for preventive maintenance and parts replacement.

Their reasoning for this is the stresses placed on the frame of the stretcher from weight distribution, movement over uneven surfaces, and subsequent metal deflection causes the metal to weaken with age.

RECOMMENDATION

The Fire Chief recommends the purchase of four (4) new stretchers to replace four (4) that have reached their end of service life as established by the manufacturer.
