RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends City Council accept the donation of $5,000 from Partners for Parks to resurface the basketball court and paint the surface at South Park.
BACKGROUND (Consistency with Adopted Plans and Policies, if applicable)
The basketball court at South Park is an asphalt surface that has not been sealed for years. There are numerous cracks moving across the surface. The court is in need of resurfacing now before moisture causes more extensive damage. Interact, a youth service group sponsored by Rotary, has agreed to paint a mural on the surface once the resurfacing is complete. The Park Board has approved the concept the students are proposing to paint and the cost of the paint and supplies is funded by the donation. The mural does not increase maintenance and the resurfacing will actually save the Parks Department from even higher replacement costs.
ALTERNATIVES
City Council may:
- Accept; or,
- Not Accept the donation
FISCAL EFFECTS
The donation to resurface the basketball courts will actually save the Parks Department money.
SUMMARY
The donation to resurface the basketball courts at South Park will help to increase activity levels at the park by making them safer, more attractive and will extend the life of the asphalt surface.
