PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
With approval of the school bond, it is proposed to construct an addition to McKinley Elementary School located at 820 North 31st Street. McKinley School currently operates with no off street parking and has for many years. The proposed addition would not add any additional parking. The School District is requesting the variance to allow no off street parking in order to maximize the site for the building and play areas. The parking requirement for a school is 5 spaces plus one for each classroom. Without the variance, McKinley School would be required to have 25 spaces.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
The Council may:
- Approve the variance for the continuation of no off street parking for this complex; or
- Do not approve the variance. The School District would have to redesign their plans to construct necessary parking.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no significant financial impact to the City for this variance.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends Council approve a parking variance as a continuation of no off street parking requirements for the addition to McKinley School.
