PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
Children make up 15-20% of all fire deaths. In 2013, 334 children ages 19 and under died from fires or burns and 44% were children under age 5. It only takes two minutes for a fire to fill a home with black smoke or engulf it in flames. The Town Pump Foundation would like to donate $1,000 so that the Fire Prevention Bureau may purchase an inflatable fire house. The fire house will be used to teach children proper fire safety behavior, such as dropping and rolling on the ground if clothing catches fire, crawling instead of running out of a house, or covering their mouths if it is smoky. City Administrative Order #103 requires all donations exceeding $500 to be approved by the City Council.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
City Council may accept or not accept the $1,000 donation from the Town Pump Charitable Foundation to be used to purchase an inflatable fire house to promote fire safety in our community.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Accepting this $1,000 donation will allow the Fire Prevention Bureau to purchase an inflatable fire house. The department will not purchase this training tool without the donation.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the $1,000 donation from the Town Pump Charitable Foundation to purchase an inflatable fire house for public fire safety training.
