PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
Phillips 66 would like to donate $10,000 so that the Fire Department may purchase an inflatable fire house, smoke machine and portable generator. The fire house will be used to teach children proper fire safety behavior, such as 'Stop, Drop and Roll' if clothes catch fire, crawling instead of running out of a house, or covering their mouths if it is smoky. This prop will be used in the elementary school system, for the department's fire prevention week, during station tours and at community activities. The ability to teach fire safety at an early age has a direct impact on fire safety throughout a person's life. City Administrative Order #103 requires all donations exceeding $500 to be approved by the City Council.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
City Council may accept or not accept the $10,000 donation from Phillips 66 to be used to purchase an inflatable fire house, smoke machine and portable generator to be used to promote fire safety in our community.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Accepting this $10,000 donation will allow the City of Billings Fire Department to fully fund the purchase an inflatable fire house. The department could not purchase this training tool without the donation.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the $10,000 donation from Phillips 66 to fully fund the purchase of an inflatable fire house, smoke machine and portable generator to be used for fire safety training within the community.
