PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
The City of Billings utilized DragonWave Point-to-Point Wireless hardware to provide a network connection to 4 of our remote facilities for about 8 years. Last year, the Information Technology Division replaced the DragonWave equipment with new Trango hardware to increase bandwidth capacity and improve overall reliability in low visibility weather conditions. The City has no use for the DragonWave equipment but it is still in working condition and can be used by another agency. Ravalli County in Western Montana has expressed interest in using the hardware to provide a much needed link between their main offices and the county fairgrounds. Therefore, staff is requesting approval to donate the DragonWave equipment to Ravalli County.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
City Council may:
- Approve the donation of the DragonWave hardware to Ravalli County; or
- Not approve the donation of the DragonWave hardware to Ravalli County
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The only other option for disposal of this equipment is to send it to auction or recycling, whereas Ravalli County can make use of the equipment.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council allow Information Technology to donate the Dragonwave hardware to Ravalli County.
