PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
One bid was received by the Street/Traffic Division for the Public Works Department on September 12, 2017 to purchase a current model snow melting machine. The primary reason for purchasing this machine is to melt some of the snow rather than hauling all of the snow to snow storage areas that are at or exceeding capacity in high snow years. This unit is mobile and will allow crews to travel to different parts of the city to melt the snow. The snow melter will remove solid materials in the melt water from the machine allowing discharge to the storm sewer. This was an approved item in the FY17/18 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
City Council may:
- Approve purchasing a new current model snow melter, or;
- Not approve the purchase. If the purchase is not approved the Public Works Department will continue to struggle with adequate space to dispose of hauled snow.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The City received one bid for the snow melter as shown below:

RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the low bid and purchase the snow melter from Ajax Tocco in the amount of $265,034. This includes a two-year parts and labor warranty and one pre-season visit.
