PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
The Billings Police Department and the Yellowstone County Sheriff's office through the City County Special Investigations Unit (CCSIU) received a forfeiture vehicle from a judgment in Bighorn County. In the forfeiture order, Bighorn County exclusively distributed the vehicle to the Billings Police Department. At this time, the Billings Police Department does not wish to add this vehicle to their fleet. The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office has agreed to accept the forfeited vehicle in their fleet for official use. The City's purchasing procedures allows this donation with City Council approval.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
City Council may:
- Approve donating the forfeited vehicle to the Yellowstone County Sheriff's office; or
- Not approve donating the forfeited vehicle to the Yellowstone County Sheriff's office which would result in the Billings Police Department adding the vehicle to the fleet or auctioning the vehicle.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The total estimated value of the donation is $4,725.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council approve donating the forfeited vehicle to the Yellowstone County Sheriff's office.
