RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends purchasing two (2) automated sideloaders from SWS Equipment, LLC in the amount of $859,638.56. 

BACKGROUND (Consistency with Adopted Plans and Policies, if applicable)

The purchase of two (2) automated side-load collection trucks is included in the approved FY24 Equipment Replacement Plan (ERP) and FY24 Solid Waste budget.  Solid Waste is utilizing the Sourcewell cooperative contract for this purchase as pricing is similar to competitive bid pricing.  These trucks will replace trucks with high mileage.  However, Public Works intends to retain the old trucks until the route optimization implementation is complete, and it is determined which trucks are needed.  If we later find the older trucks are not needed, the City will sell or trade the trucks during the next truck purchase process.

ALTERNATIVES

City Council may:
  • Approve; the purchase with SWS Equipment, LLC for $859,638.56 or,
  • Not Approve the purchase.  If council doesn't approve the purchase our current fleet will continue to age and repair cost and downtime will go up, and customer service will suffer.  

FISCAL EFFECTS

The trucks are budgeted in FY 24 using Solid Waste funds.  The purchase amount is more than budgeted by approximately $60,000 due to not trading in the current trucks.  Public Works will utilize savings from other solid waste equipment purchases or capital projects to fund the overage.
