RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that City Council approve and accept the State Highway Traffic Safety Billings DUI Program grant in the amount of $135,000 for the period of October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026.
BACKGROUND (Consistency with Adopted Plans and Policies, if applicable)
The State of Montana, State Highway Traffic Safety Division, has awarded the City a $135,000 grant to fund a DUI officer. The grant begins on October 1, 2025, and ends September 30, 2026. $115,000 will be used to pay salary and benefits for a full-time DUI patrol officer. $20,000 will be used to pay for overtime costs for DUI details and patrols.
ALTERNATIVES
City Council may:
- Approve the State Highway Traffic Safety DUI Grant in the Amount of $135,000 for traffic enforcement funding; or,
- Not Approve the State Highway Traffic Safety DUI Grant in the Amount of $135,000, which would eliminate the DUI funding and provide further direction to staff.
FISCAL EFFECTS
There is no financial impact on the general fund.
