RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that City Council accept a grant from the Mason Moore Foundation in the amount of $5,000 to be used to purchase a thermal pole camera attachment.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Broadwater County Sheriff's Deputy Mason Moore was killed in the line of duty. His family and friends have started the Mason Moore Foundation as a way to continue his work and to give back to the Law Enforcement Community.  One of the goals of the Mason Moore Foundation is to provide grants to increase OFFICER SAFETY. The Billings Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team (BPD SWAT) has applied for $5,000 to be used to purchase a thermal pole camera attachment. The thermal pole camera attachment will provide officers with a visual heat signature of any potential suspect hiding in low-light environments, including attic spaces, basements, crawl spaces and open areas.

BACKGROUND (Consistency with Adopted Plans and Policies, if applicable)

Council policy requires that any donation greater than $500 must be approved by the City Council.  City Council is being asked to accept a donation in the amount of $5,000 from the Mason Moore Foundation to purchase a thermal pole camera attachment.

FISCAL EFFECTS

There is no impact to the General Fund as the grant will cover all equipment costs.

STAKEHOLDERS

ALTERNATIVES

City Council may:
  • Approve the donation to the Billings Police Department in the amount of $5,000 or;
  • Disapprove the donation to the Billings Police Department in the amount of $5,000 and disallow the purchase of the thermal pole camera attachment, thus reducing officer safety.
