Staff recommends that the City Council approve and accept the State Highway Traffic Safety Division’s DUI Program Grant in the amount of $148,535 for the grant period of October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.
 

The State of Montana, State Highway Traffic Safety Division’s DUI Grant Program has awarded the Billings Police Department $148,535 for the period of October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. The grant will provide funding to support DUI enforcement efforts through a full-time DUI patrol officer, overtime for targeted DUI enforcement activities, and related operating expenses and supplies. Acceptance of the grant will provide dedicated funding to enhance the City’s traffic safety and DUI enforcement efforts.

The State of Montana, through the State Highway Traffic Safety Division, has awarded the City $148,535 in grant funding to support DUI enforcement efforts. The grant will fund a full-time DUI patrol officer and provide additional resources for targeted DUI enforcement activities.

Grant funds will be allocated as follows:

• $120,000 for salary and benefits associated with a full-time DUI patrol officer;
• $20,000 for overtime costs related to DUI enforcement details and patrols; and
• $8,535 for operating expenses and supplies.

The grant period is October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. Acceptance of the grant will provide dedicated funding to support DUI enforcement and enhance the City’s traffic safety efforts.

There is no impact to the General Fund.

• Approve and accept the State Highway Traffic Safety DUI Program Grant in the amount of $148,535 to support DUI enforcement and traffic safety efforts; or
• Decline to approve and accept the grant, which would result in the loss of the available DUI enforcement funding and provide further direction to staff.
