PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT

W.O. 13-08, 58th and Grand Storm Drain Improvements, will fix an existing storm drainage problem at 58th Street West and Grand Avenue by installing a pipe from that intersection to the Birely Drain.  The project was awarded to Springline Construction at the June 24, 2013, Council meeting in the amount of $91,981.75.

After this project was awarded it was determined that if the current design was modified slightly with a larger sized pipe, the City could construct a critical piece of West End storm drain infrastructure and also provide a future drainage opportunity to the intersection of 56th Street West and Grand Avenue.  The added cost to make this change is $51,357, which includes the larger sized pipe and anticipated costs for additional import backfill and pipe bedding.     

ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED

The Council may:
  • Approve Change Order No. 1 with Springling Construction, Inc. in the amount of $51,357.00; or 
  • Do not approve Change Order No. 1.  Disapproval of Change Order No. 1 will result in a project that does not allow for future drainage potential to the intersection of 56th Street West and Grand Avenue.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Funding for this change order will be paid out of Storm Drain Funds.  The original contract amount for this project is $91,981.75.  The contract amount after this change order is $143,338.75.  Sufficient funds are available in FY 14 for this change order.

RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that Council approve Change Order #1 for W.O. 13-08;  58th and Grand Storm Drain Improvements with Springline Construction, Inc. in the amount of $51,357.00.
