PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT
The Billings Public Library, in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming, was awarded a $750 mini-grant from the National Girls Collaborative Project to offer a series of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) programs for girls. The goal is to provide STEM programming for all interested girls aged five to eighteen to help encourage them to participate in science related activities. With help from the Girl Scouts, the Library will recruit role models who are currently working in STEM fields to work on projects with the girls. The program will be promoted as a month long learning experience for girls in our community and will also spotlight women who work in STEM related fields and are Girl Scout alumnae.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED
City Council may:
- Approve, or;
- Disapprove the grant
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Approving the mini-grant will allow the Library to support STEM programming and offset material and supply costs. There is no negative financial impact and the only local resource being used is the staff time required to help conduct the programs.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the mini-grant of $750 from the National Girls Collaborative Project.
