PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT

The Montana District 1 Little League sent a letter (attached) requesting that the new baseball field at Centennial Park be named Musburger Field.  In the mid-1950s, Mr. Cecil Musburger contacted Little League Baseball Inc. and requested information about chartering a Little League in Billings, Montana. Mr. Musburger began a partnership with Little League Baseball, Inc. that has now existed for over 60 years.  Over 5,000 boys and girls between the ages 4 and 18 participate annually in what is now called Montana District 1 Little League Baseball and Softball.

Mr. Musburger has not been recognized for his efforts to bring Little League Baseball to Billings. Montana District 1 Little League believes it would be appropriate to honor him and his efforts by naming the new baseball field at Centennial Park in his honor. This field is presently known as the Big Field at Centennial Park.  Per City policy, the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board (PRCB) reviewed the request and recommends that the new baseball field at Centennial Park be named Musburger Field.

ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED

City Council may:
  • Approve the PRCB's recommendation to name the new baseball field at Centennial Park as Musburger Field , or;
  • Disapprove the recommendation and provide additional guidance to staff.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

The Montana District 1 Little League has volunteered to install a sign on the scoreboard at the baseball field. There should be no additional costs attached to naming the field.

RECOMMENDATION

The Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board recommends to the City Council that the new baseball field at Centennial Park be named Musburger Field.
