PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT

The Billings Public Library was granted an opportunity to participate in the Science Action Club program designed by the California Academy of Sciences and awarded through the Montana Girls STEM Collaborative at Montana State University.  The opportunity includes a complete science kit designed to provide 24 after-school programs for youth in grades 5-8. Under the instruction of our librarians, youth will study local bugs and birds while developing reasoning skills related to the scientific method. The opportunity includes professional training for staff to develop the essential skills needed to facilitate the activities using teaching kits and digital resources.  By accepting the award, valued at $500, the Library will be able to grow the number and quality of after-school STEM learning opportunities for youth in our community while providing to Library staff the necessary training to facilitate the programs.  City Administrative Order requires all donations of $500 or more to be approved by Council.
