PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT

Bids were received on October 15, 2019 to purchase one new current model forklift for the Water Quality Division of the Public Works Department.  Staff advertised for sealed bids in the Yellowstone County News and on the City's website on September 27, October 4 and October 11, 2019.  This purchase will replace an existing forklift that is included in the FY 2020 Equipment Replacement Plan (ERP) and the FY 2020 budget for the Water Quality Division.  The City received one (1) bid and Tractor & Equipment Co. was the low bidder. The bid is within the range staff had expected for this item. 

ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED

City Council may:
  • Approve purchasing one new current model forklift from Tractor & Equipment Co. or;
  • Disapprove the purchase and reject all bids.  If the new forklift is not purchased, the Public Works Department will be required to continue using the existing unit that is at or near the end of its useful life.  Maintenance costs will increase and reliability will decrease.

RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that Council award the contract for one new current model forklift to Tractor & Equipment Co. in the amount of $98,662.00.  This includes the new forklift and the five-year warranty on the transmission and engine.
