Presentation:

PROBLEM/ISSUE STATEMENT

City election ward boundaries must be adjusted to conform to city limit amendments resulting from the annexation of property into the city. The City Council approved the annexation of the south 310 feet of Lot 24, Sugar Subdivision, located at 766 Calhoun Lane, (Annexation #11-01) on January 24, 2011. This annexation requires a change in the boundaries of Ward I to include the subject property. Two readings are required for this action. The first reading of the ordinance was approved by the City Council after conducting a public hearing on February 14, 2011. The Council must now approve the ordinance on second reading to add the property to Ward I.

ALTERNATIVES ANALYZED

There are no viable alternatives to the recommended action.  If the Council disapproves the Ordinance, the resident(s) of the property would not be assigned to a voting ward and thus, would be unable to participate in municipal elections.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

There should be no direct financial impact to the City by adding the subject property to Ward 1.

RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that Council approve this ordinance on second reading, adding recently annexed property to Ward 1.
