Agenda Item Text:
Approve a proclamation to proclaim September 21, 2014 as the 50th Anniversary of Cochise College in Cochise County.
Background:
You may have heard by now that Cochise College will celebrate 50 years of service to the residents of Cochise County during the 2014-2015 school year. To commemorate the occasion, the college plans a number of events, including public ceremonies in which we hope the Cochise County Board of Supervisors will take part.
A Sierra Vista Campus ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, and a Douglas Campus ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23. Both will be followed by free public performances of Twist & Shout: The Definitive Beatles Experience. The dates were selected to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first day of class.
The purpose of this letter is to ask the Cochise County Board of Supervisors to consider issuing a proclamation marking the occasion. We are not familiar with the steps required and have provided draft language for such a document.
Should the board agree to participate, we request your recommendation about who should read the proclamation as part of one or both ceremonies before Thursday, July 31, and to have finalized proclamation language by Monday, Aug. 18. We would appreciate knowing, as well, if these deadlines are not feasible for the county to meet. They were selected primarily to allow the college time to plan.
Anniversary events for which details are relatively certain are listed at www.cochise.edu/50; the site will be modified as additional events and materials become available.
The college is proud to serve as a partner and resource providing golden opportunities to organizations and citizens across Cochise County. We hope the county will join us in celebrating this special occasion.
