NOTE: THIS ITEM WILL BE HEARD IN OPEN SESSION--
Approve a letter of appreciation to Governor Jan Brewer for her role in budget negotiations with the State legislature on behalf of Arizona's counties.
Approve a letter of appreciation to Governor Jan Brewer for her role in budget negotiations with the State legislature on behalf of Arizona's counties.
Background:
Supervisors and professional staff,
As you know, the final state budget adopted by the legislature exempted your counties (the ten ‘small’ counties) from being included in the forced county contributions and the HURF shift to MVD.
Recent discussions with legislators and staff indicate that Governor Brewer played a decisive role in this outcome. Accordingly, CSA recommends that you please send a note of appreciation to Governor Brewer expressing your county’s thanks for the Governor’s efforts on behalf of Arizona’s counties in negotiations with legislative leadership. The note should be sent to Local Government Policy Advisor Page Gonzales: pgonzales@az.gov, with a cc to the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Eileen Klein: eklein@az.gov.
Please include in your note the following:
An acknowledgement that the state faced a daunting fiscal crisis that demanded painful and unwelcome choices
An positive and enthusiastic expression of gratitude for her advocacy on behalf of counties during budget negotiations with legislative leadership
A polite request that she continue to protect counties in future budgets, and as she reviews legislation that comes across her desk
Acknowledging and thanking Governor Brewer for her role in protecting your county will help strengthen the counties’ relationship with her and her office, which will be critical in future years as the state continues to struggle with its ongoing budget crisis.
Please let me know if I can assist in any way with drafting your correspondence.
