Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve an adjustment to Grant HT-21-2912 between the City of Tucson and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, for the Southwest Border Arizona Region High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, in the additional amount of $6,520.90, for travel and equipment.

Background:

On 5/4/21 the Board of Supervisors approved Grant agreement HT21-2912.  It is the Sheriff's Office recurring contract for funding of personnel by the Southwest Border Arizona Region High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Southern Arizona Major Investigative Team (SAMIT). This grant is a funding source the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has applied for, and has been approved to utilize as a source of funding for salaries, partial fringe benefits (ERE), and to purchase supplies for one deputy assigned to work in the HIDTA drug task force. This task force works under the guidance of a local Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Office. Their mission is to combat illegal drug use, sales, and smuggling occurring within the communities of Cochise County.

Recently we applied for and were approved to receive additional grant  funding for travel and equipment.  The funds are connected to our current grant, HT21-2921.  We requested $3,520.90 for travel expenses related to training and $3,000.00 for surveillance equipment(binoculars & spotting scopes).  The total amount is $6,520.90.  The funding does not encumber the county with additional expenses such as a matching fund requirement.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

If approved, the Sheriff’s Office will be able to send up to 5 personnel to training which will improve their ability to serve and protect the citizens of Cochise County.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

If not approved, we will not be able to send up to 5 people to training and will not be able to purchase needed surveillance equipment.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:

The grant does not require a BOS signature, however we do need authorization to accept it.
