Agenda Item Text:

Approve Amendment 1 to the grant agreement with Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona for the Cochise County Mental Health Support Team project, in the amount of $383,056, extending the agreement through June 1, 2026.

Background:

To better address the epidemic of Mental Illness in Cochise County, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office sought a grant to fund the creation of a Mental Health Support Team. This grant agreement was originally approved by the Board of Supervisors on July 26, 2022. The mission of this team is multi-faceted and will, amongst other things, include: (1) responding to incidents where persons are experiencing mental crises and deescalating those events; (2) taking a proactive approach in identifying those suffering from mental illness and providing them with existing programs and resources to address their mental illness; (3) teaching Crisis Intervention Techniques/de-escalation tactics to regional law enforcement officers; (4) providing mental health support to local schools; (5)transporting individuals to in-patient treatment facilities; and (6) teaching suicide prevention classes.
This program will be fully funded as a result of generous financial support from the Legacy Foundation of Southeastern Arizona. The following funds have been disbursed:
1) $497,338.00 - September 2022
2) $383,056.00 - June 2023

The final payment of $383,056.00 has not been received.  Amendment 1, if approved, will allow Cochise County Sheriff's Office to receive final payment and extend the program through June 1,2026.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Upon board approval, CCSO will request final payment of $383,056.00 from the Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona and continue providing the much-needed services to the citizens and employees of Cochise County through the Cochise County Mental Health Support Team.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

If not approved, $383,056.00 will not be requested, significantly hindering the ability of the Cochise County Mental Health Support Team to carry on with their mission of providing Mental Health support to citizens and employees in Cochise County.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:

Please provide a signed copy of the amendment to Commander Robert Watkins or a member of the CCSO Command Staff.
