Agenda Item Text:
Approve Cochise County Information Technology Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) Policy #1810, which establishes standards and guidelines governing the responsible use of generative AI technologies by individuals using County systems or resources.
Background:
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) technologies are rapidly evolving and becoming more widely available. These technologies offer opportunities to improve efficiency, research, communication, and other work activities, but they also introduce considerations related to data protection, privacy, security, and the handling of sensitive information.
Cochise County Information Technology developed Policy #1810 to establish guidance for the responsible use of generative AI technologies by individuals using County systems or resources. The policy provides standards for acceptable use, protection of County data, and security considerations to ensure that emerging AI capabilities are used in a manner consistent with County policies, operational needs, and legal obligations.
Department's Next Steps (if approved):
If approved, Cochise County Information Technology will implement Policy #1810 and incorporate the guidance into existing information security governance practices. The policy will provide direction for the responsible use of generative AI technologies when accessing or using County systems or data.
Information Technology will also continue to monitor developments in generative AI technologies and recommend updates to the policy as needed to ensure alignment with County security practices, operational needs, and legal obligations.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
If not approved, Cochise County would not have formal guidance governing the use of generative artificial intelligence technologies when accessing or using County systems or data. This could increase the risk of inconsistent practices and potential exposure of sensitive County information.
