Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve a Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) grant application in the amount of $6,226.90 to expand summer reading opportunities for rural and lower-income children and partner with schools to stop ‘reading gains loss’ during the summer months.

Background:

The Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records Agency (State Library) offers grant funding to libraries. This funding is made possible through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) state-based program. The Cochise County Library District has applied for a LSTA Learning Grant to expand summer reading opportunities for rural and lower-income children and partner with schools to stop ‘reading gains loss’ during the summer months.

Funds will be used to purchase e-readers, reading list books, postage for mailing books, fuel (for the bookmobile’s additional stops, book delivery and school visits), and for travel to the grant seminar. Children will benefit from extra reading opportunities geared to their reading level and interests. Schools benefit by having students return ready to read and learn, with no loss of past reading gains.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

We will submit the application.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

Without grant funding we will not be able to expand our services to our rural and underserved children.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:

No action required.
