Agenda Item Text:
Presentation to the Board of Supervisors by the Coronado Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Program with additional information about onionweed, where the infestations are located in the county, and discussion on ways that Cochise County can support efforts to control this aggressive weed.
Background:
Onionweed (Asphodelus fistulosus) is a federally listed noxious, invasive weed. Presidential Executive Order 13112 (1999), defines federally listed invasive species as alien species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. There are several infestations of onionweed in Arizona, with the majority occurring in Cochise County. USDA-APHIS has been the active agency in education and control efforts. However, in 2012, they lost funding for that program. Locally, several entities have received grant funding to support further efforts. We would like to provide the Board of Supervisors with additional information about onionweed, where the infestations are located in the county, and discuss ways that Cochise County can support efforts to control this aggressive weed.
