Agenda Item Text:
Discussion and possible direction on the proposed update to the Cochise County Building Safety Codes (I-Codes).
Background:
In 2004, Cochise County adopted the 2003 I-Code series to protect the health, safety, and welfare of public and private property. While the 2006 Plumbing and 2005 Electric codes were adopted in 2007, no further updates have been considered by the Board of Supervisors. The International Code Council (ICC) updates the suite of I-Codes every three years. These updates are meant to include the evolving changes of materials and technologies. Staff can no longer receive training on these dated codes, as many jurisdictions in Arizona have moved forward to the 2012 I-Codes.
Staff presented the proposed updates to the Building Code Advisory and Appeals Board on September 9, 2014. Their recommendations include removing and amending some language in the 2012 I-Codes, which staff is prepared to discuss with the Board.
While the International Code Council (ICC) is preparing a 2015 version of the I-Codes, other municipalities and jurisdictions within the County have adopted the 2012 version. Staff if recommending that the Board consider updating the current Building Safety Codes to the 2012 version.
