Agenda Item Text:
Adopt Resolution 22-06 defining the Cochise County Justice of the Peace Precinct boundaries, effective March 8, 2022.
Background:
Pursuant to A.R.S. § 16-411, the Board of Supervisors of each county shall on or before December 1 of each year preceding the year of a general election, by an order, establish a convenient number of election precincts in the county and define the boundaries thereof. Pursuant tp A.R.S. § 16-412 for the purpose of conducting any election called pursuant to the laws of this state, precincts adopted under the provisions of A.R.S. § 16-411 shall become effective no later than March 1 of the year of the next general election. The Board of Supervisors approved the Justice of the Peace (JP) Precincts on November 30, 2021, and on December 14, 2021, adopted Resolution 21-28, formally defining the boundaries.
In light of the Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) redistricting of Congressional and Legislative lines, it is necessary to approve changes to the JP Precincts. Similar to the College changes, these changes will reduce the need for additional precincts. One change is between JP5 and JP1, in the Coronado National Forest. The other is very minor and remote between JP 1 and JP2 along the border.
