Ratify receipt of Governor Brewer's Proclamation calling for a Special Primary Election on April 17, 2012 and General Election on June 12, 2012 to fill the Eighth Congressional District seat in Arizona left vacant from the resignation of Gabrielle Giffords on January 25, 2012.

Background:

On January 25, 2012, The Honorable Gabrielle Giffords resigned as a United States Representative for the Eighth Congressional District in Arizona and that office is officially declared vacant.

Pursuant to Section 16-222(B) of the Arizona Revised Statutes, upon the occurrence of a vacancy in the office of a representative in Congress, if the next general election is not to be held within six months from the date of the occurrence of the vacancy, the governor shall call a special primary election and a special general election to fill the vacancy.

Janice K. Brewer, Governor of the State of Arizona, proclaimed and ordered the calling of a special primary election and a special general election in accordance with Arizona law for the purpose of filling the vacancy in the Eighth Congressional District in Arizona. The special primary election shall occur on April 17, 2012 and the special general election shall occur on June 12, 2012.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Publish a copy of the election proclamation in an official newspaper of the county at least five days before the special primary election and at least five days before the special general election.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

Proclamation will not be ratified.
