Agenda Item Text:

Discussion and possible direction regarding the proposed creation of a Mental Health Support Team in Cochise County, with initial program funding via a Grant Agreement with the Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona in the amount of $1,263,449.

Background:

The purpose of today's Work Session is to update the Board of Supervisors regarding the proposed creation of a Mental Health Support Team in Cochise County.

The purpose of the Mental Health Support Team will include:
  1. respond to incidents where persons are experiencing mental crises and deescalate those events;
  2. take a proactive approach in identifying those suffering from mental illness and provide them with existing programs and resources to address their mental illness;
  3. teach Crisis Intervention Techniques/deescalation tactics to regional law enforcement officers;
  4. provide mental health support to local schools;
  5. transport individuals to in-patient treatment facilities; and,
  6. teach suicide prevention classes.
Initial funding for the first three years of the program would be through a Grant Agreement from the Legacy Foundation of Southeastern Arizona. The Grant Agreement is attached and will be presented at the July 26, 2022 Regular Board of Supervisors Meeting for a formal vote.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Place the Grant Agreement on the July 26, 2022 Board Meeting agenda for approval.
