Adopt Resolution 22-29, ordering the formation of the Cochise County Jail District contingent upon voter approval of an excise tax, and directing that the approval of the excise tax be placed on the ballot for the election to be held on May 16, 2023.

Background:

At a Special Meeting on October 21, 2022, the Board adopted Resolution 22-28, to consider the Cochise County Jail District. The publication and posting requirements set forth in A.R.S. § 48-4001 were met.

At today's meeting, the Board will hold a Public Hearing to hear all persons who wish to appear in favor of or against the establishment of the Cochise County Jail District. Judge James Conlogue (Ret.), Chair of the Jail District Public Outreach Committee (JDC), will present the Board with the JDC's recommendation. Additionally, the Sheriff's Office and staff will present additional information for the Board's consideration.

Copies of presentations from JDC meetings are attached for additional background information.

Proceed with the Jail District planning process and prepare for the election.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

There will not be an election on May 16, 2023, for the voters consider the excise tax.
