Agenda Item Text:

Approve the receipt of $450,000 from the Arizona State Treasurer, under Arizona Senate Bill 1720, Section 116 to be allocated to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office for search and rescue-related equipment.

Background:

The Arizona Sheriff's Association has been working with the state to obtain assistance in funding mandated search and rescue operations. During this year's legislative session, $2,500,000.00 was allocated to be distributed to County Sheriffs for Search and Rescue related equipment.  The following is a percentage break down of this distribution to the Sheriff's Offices:

24 (a) Cochise county, not more than eighteen percent.
25 (b) Coconino county, not more than twenty-one percent.
26 (c) Gila county, not more than two and one-half percent.
27 (d) Greenlee county, not more than one-half percent.
28 (e) Mohave county, not more than twenty-one percent.
29 (f) Navajo county, not more than one-half percent.
30 (g) Pinal county, not more than twenty-two percent.
31 (h) Yavapai county, not more than thirteen and one-half percent.
32 (i) Apache, Graham, La Paz, Maricopa, Pima, Santa Cruz and Yuma counties, not more than a total of one percent distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cochise County Sheriff's Office 18% share equates to $450,000.00 for this equipment.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

If approved, the Sheriff's Office will begin purchasing much needed search and rescue equipment such as winter gear, technical rescue, swiftwater rescue, all terrain vehicles, equipment trailers, etc.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

If not approved, the Sheriff's Office will have to find alternative funding sources to obtain search and rescue equipment.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:

As this is a legislative allocation, no contract or agreement is required.
