Background:
In November the County Schools' Behavioral Health Team completed a Grief Conversations training with Tu Nidito. This training taught us how to host grief groups to provide support for students and staff going through the grief process. However, in order to utilize the curriculum and support from Tu Nidito we need to enter into an MOU with them.
Grief can be due to many things: death, separation (divorce, incarceration, deployment, DCS involved removal), and serious illness of self or a loved one. Statistics show that 7 out of 10 teachers will have at least 1 student grieving a loss.
This school year there have been multiple student and staff deaths in Cochise County. These deaths impacted many people at each school. As our team has gone to help at the schools, we are hearing that grief is affecting the behavior and performance of the students. They have expressed that grief groups would be beneficial.
“For children, grief can have a profound effect on learning and school performance. Typically, they experience difficulty with concentration. Distractions abound. Schoolwork may seem puzzling or pointless. Good students may be discouraged to see their grades slip. Students already struggling with school may see their learning problems worsen.”
