Agenda Item Text:

Discussion and possible direction regarding the Sheriff's Office Financial Position.

Background:

This work session was at the request of Supervisor Crosby.

The Cochise County Board of Supervisors has the authority and responsibility to oversee the financial management and operations of county departments, as outlined in Arizona Revised Statutes Title 11, Section 11-251. This includes the supervision of county officers responsible for assessing, collecting, managing, and disbursing public funds.

Recently, an exploratory review was conducted for all departments under the direct oversight of the Board of Supervisors, leading to the implementation of a new payroll system. Given that the Sheriff's Office and Jail constitute a significant portion of the County’s financial obligations, it is appropriate for the Board to assess the Sheriff's Office's overall financial position.

This work session will provide transparency and ensure that Cochise County citizens have clear insight into the financial investment in law enforcement. The discussion aims to support the continued accountability and effectiveness of the Sheriff’s Office while maintaining the high standards expected by the community.
Proposed Outcome:

  • Review and discuss the current financial position of the Sheriff’s Office.

  • Identify key financial concerns and areas requiring oversight or adjustments.

  • Ensure continued transparency and efficiency in financial management.

  • Maintain public confidence in the operations and fiscal responsibility of the Sheriff's Office.
