Agenda Item Text:

Discussion and and possible direction regarding a proposed resolution expressing opposition to the current implementation of the Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction Program and recommending reforms including enhanced state-level authority, improved compensation for livestock losses, and development of response protocols.

Background:

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has continued to expand the Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction Program in Southeastern Arizona, including portions of Cochise County. The draft resolution under consideration outlines the Board’s concerns regarding the escalating impact of wolf reintroductions on local ranchers, livestock producers, and public safety, citing economic harm, regulatory barriers to compensation, and insufficient state-level management authority.

The proposed resolution calls for a number of actions including downlisting of the Mexican gray wolf’s status under the Endangered Species Act, amendments to current depredation protocols, and legislative support for enhanced local control. The resolution also suggests designating the County Sheriff as a central reporting authority and urges stronger compensation mechanisms and public safety response protocols.
