Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve State Grant for Public Defender Training funds, per A.R.S. § 12-117 for the Legal Advocate, in the amount of $3,000, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

Background:

In 1989 the Arizona Legislature enacted A.R.S. § 12-117 for the purpose of providing funds to the Supreme Court for distribution to county public defenders for indigent defense training purposes.  The amount the Legal Advocate is expected to receive for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 is included in the budget.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Approvals respectfully requested.  Use funding in accordance with the agreement attached hereto.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

If not approved, the Legal Advocate will depend solely on the county general fund for funding for mandatory continuing legal education credits for attorney staff.
