Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve Grant "Protecting Rural Communities from West Nile Virus through Prevention, Education, and Personal Protection" from Arizona Complete Health to provide mosquito dunks, mosquito netting, repellent, screen repair kits, and educational materials to be distributed to Cochise County residents by Cochise County Health & Social Services, in the amount of $12,000, for the period of October 12, 2026, through October 12, 2027.

Background:

The proposed initiative reflects a fundamental principle of public health: prevention is most effective when people have both the knowledge and resources necessary to protect themselves. A resident may understand the importance of mosquito repellent but still lack the resources to purchase it. Another resident may know that damaged screens increase mosquito exposure but not have the materials needed to make repairs. This project addresses both challenges by combining education with direct access to prevention supplies. The investment will therefore extend beyond the products purchased. It will strengthen the community's ability to prevent mosquito exposure, respond to public health concerns, and protect residents through practical prevention measures. All activities will be performed through the CCHSS prevention and promotion team as well as public health emergency preparedness.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

We will order the mosquito dunks, mosquito netting, repellent, and screen repair kits and begin distributing them to Cochise County residents in addition to providing educational information through outreach.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

We will not be able to provide the mosquito prevention or educational materials to Cochise County residents to prevent West Nile Virus.
