Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Update
SUMMARY EXPLANATION/BACKGROUND:
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Pub. L. 117–58, November 15, 2021; also referred to as the “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law” or “BIL”) established the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Discretionary Grant Program (BIL Section 24112) and appropriated funds to the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) under Division J, Title VIII of BIL to implement the Program. The funds are available to provide Federal financial assistance to support local initiatives to prevent death and serious injury on roads and streets, commonly referred to as “Vision Zero” or “Toward Zero Deaths” initiatives.
The Broward MPO and Broward County Government received a $5 million grant from the USDOT to develop the Broward Regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The Action Plan is a joint commitment between the Broward MPO and Broward County to develop a Countywide Safe System Approach and implementation strategies to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries by a mutually agreed-upon date to be determined through the development of the Action Plan. This Plan will improve safety for all roadway users, including vulnerable users (pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, micromobility and other non-motor vehicle users).
Together, the MPO and Broward County Government will utilize the SS4A grant funding to develop an Action Plan that:
1. Creates an Action Plan with defined goals
2. Identifies projects and prepares them for funding and implementation
3. Identifies policies and programs to increase safety for roadway users and prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries
At the upcoming meeting, MPO staff will provide an update on the SS4A Grant and address any questions or comments. For the PowerPoint presentation, please see the Attachment.
