TITLE:

Update on and Discussion of City of Flagstaff Resiliency and Preparedness Efforts

DESIRED OUTCOME:

Provide City Council members with an update on the municipality's resiliency and preparedness efforts since the passage of the 2012 resolution. Request direction on how to support resilience and preparedness in the organization and community into the future.


EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

This presentation will first review the background information and impetus for municipal resiliency and preparedness work, including an overview of relevant policies and goals. Following this initial framing, staff will provide council with information on current municipal projects that are contributing to resilience and preparedness, including forest and stormwater management, asphalt innovations, and work performed by the Police Department. Following this information, staff will engage in discussion with the council regarding how to support resilience and preparedness in this organization and community into the future.

11) Ensure that we are as prepared as possible for extreme weather events

REGIONAL PLAN:
Policy E&C.2.2. Promote investments that strengthen climate resilience and discourage those that heighten climate vulnerability.
Goal E&C.3. Strengthen community and natural environment resiliency through climate adaptation efforts.
Policy E&C.3.1. Develop and implement a comprehensive and proactive approach to prepare the community for and to minimize the impacts of climate change induced hazards.
Policy E&C.3.2. Review and revise existing regulations, standards, and plans (codes, ordinances, etc.) to reduce the community’s vulnerability to climate change impacts.
Policy E&C.3.3. Invest in forest health and watershed protection measures.
Policy E&C.3.4. Increase the region’s preparedness for extreme climate events.
