- Sunnyside Recycling Pilot Program - At the end of May, Solid Waste plans to roll-out a new recycling bin color for the entire neighborhood of Sunnyside. This is part of a larger effort to reduce confusion over recycling by transitioning the color of recycling in Flagstaff from green to the internationally-recognized color of blue. In addition to the new bins, Sustainability staff will be launching an outreach effort to ensure that all Sunnyside residents know how to utilize their new bins properly. As part of the outreach, Sustainability staff and certified Master Recyclers will be going door-to-door to educate residents on what is recyclable, answer questions, and provide materials such as refrigerator magnets and guides to ensure that residents know what can and cannot go into their curbside recycling bin. The new bin colors, in-person outreach, and recycling guides will hopefully go a long way in increasing the City’s recycling rates and reducing the confusion over what is and is not recyclable. This effort also provides the opportunity for City staff to assess which outreach methods are effective in an area of Flagstaff that struggles with high recycling contamination rates. Prior to implementing new bins, staff will audit the recycling in Sunnyside to get a baseline of how much of the material is actually recyclable. Months after residents have received their new recycling bins and outreach, the recycling will be audited again to see if contamination rates have decreased. Staff also plan to survey residents to see how helpful the outreach was. The results will imbue future efforts as bins are replaced across the community and hopefully help Flagstaff become a leader in recycling and waste prevention.
- Bushmaster Park - An outdoor fitness area was completed in early fall of 2016. This area consists of 12 different pieces of exercise equipment with 3 ADA accessible units. This area is enclosed with a decorative steel fencing and built in benches. In addition, the south entrance off of Elden was renovated with a new security access gate that consists of rock columns with steel railings and a solar powered gate.
- Joel Montalvo Park – This is a beautification project scheduled for later this summer. The project includes landscaping, a concrete concourse area, improved ADA access with walkways, paved parking lot and ADA compliant restrooms.
- Buffalo Park Public Restrooms – This project is scheduled for Spring 2018 with design work beginning this summer. Buffalo Park is a heavily used park by many patrons, not only in the summer but also throughout the winter. This will be a year round facility and will replace the port-o-lets that are now onsite. This is where many of the local high schools, NAU and other organizations hold their cross-country events. The exterior/architecture of this facility will complement the existing malapais rock entrance and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the park.
- Hal Jensen Recreation Center - Recent improvements were completed that include updated and centralized electrical panels, security cameras and monitoring, ceramic tile in the restrooms, gym and racquetball court sanding and refinishing including new artwork on the gym floor, storage area construction, replacement of the outdoor basketball court with new concrete and hoops, and artificial turf installation behind the building. Improvements are funded by the Community Development Block Grant
- Tennis Courts - These are four, forty-year-old tennis courts that are being rebuilt. The current courts have cracks that are allowing water to seep up through the concrete, causing damage to the existing surface. The courts are heavily programmed throughout the year by Recreation Services and are an integral part of Coconino High School’s tennis program. Construction is scheduled to begin this May (2017).
- Siler Homes Activity Center (SHAC) - The reopening of the SHAC began as a two-year pilot project in the summer of 2016 in partnership with the Flagstaff Housing Authority. The first year has been a resounding success with participation ranging from 50 to over 100 youth per week. Recreation staff manage the building with drop-in hours and provide a safe place for community youth to play, work on homework, do arts and crafts, or other activities.
