City Council Meeting - FINAL
- Meeting Date:
- 05/19/2026
- From:
- Paul Oltrogge, Wildland Fire Manager
TITLE
2026 Safe and Effective Wildfire Response
STAFF RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Information only
Executive Summary:
This is the typical Wildland Fire Management (WFM) season response presentation, but with the emphasis being on the extended fire weather outlook, the Flagstaff Fire Department's and partner agencies unified response to initial and extended attack fires, and WFM and Sustainability partner initiatives that help us with our effort to respond fires more effectively by creating a safer, more sustainable environment.
The Flagstaff Fire Department Wildland Fire Management (WFM) program continues to evolve as an industry leading modern municipal program that utilizes the best available science to safely and effectively manage wildland fire. One important part of this effort is to respond to, and fully suppress, wildland fire when our indices (mainly weather) dictate that it is the most appropriate step to take.
This presentation will focus on WFM's seasonal transition to fully suppressing fire on the landscape, as well as some of the initiatives we are introducing and stewarding with strong internal partners like Sustainability to always give us the best possible tactical advantage and come as close to eliminating the potential for catastrophic wildland fire, as possible. We have a very effective history of reducing fuel loading and risk in the forested areas that surround Flagstaff, and now we will also speak to our evolving capacity to reduce risk at the neighborhood level.
