TITLE:
Consideration and Ratification of Letter of Support: Wecom BEAD grant application
STAFF RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Retroactively approve the letter of support.
Executive Summary:
The City received a request for a letter of support from Wecom Fiber for their Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) grant proposal. The BEAD program works to expand broadband connectivity in the northern Arizona region and rural broadband is listed as a legislative priority for the Council at both the state and federal levels.
In October 2024, the Flagstaff City Council voted unanimously to award Wecom the contract. This included a $2 million grant that will fund a portion of Wecom’s design and construction of a fiber municipal network connecting an estimated nine miles of Flagstaff. After this award, Wecom has demonstrated professionalism and an ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with City staff.
Due to the grant application deadline, City staff sent the attached letter to Wecom on Match 5, 2025 to be included in their grant application submission.
