TITLE:

FY23-24 Project Extension Requests
Tia Hatton Tenny, Staff Liaison/Sustainability Coordinator

STAFF RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Discussion and Vote to approve/approve with specific guidance/deny

Executive Summary:

Three FY23-24 Neighborhood Sustainability Grant recipients have requested project extensions due to various circumstances.

1. Flagstaff Junior Academy—Please see the attached extension request. Their project can only move forward once construction is completed.
2. Flagstaff Community Fridges
  • As of early February, the structure has been constructed, and the fridge has been delivered. FCF would like to extend their projects "as the information [they currently] have to give is based on [their] pop-up distribution, which is not related to this grant. However, [FCF] have already seen the trend of individuals bringing excess food and other individuals then taking that food, so [FCF is] excited about how this will continue to play out once the fridge opens later this month. Thanks so much.
  • All funds have been expended. A grant extension would simply allow them to gather valuable data on the project's impact, now that the fridge is finally installed.
  • How long would the Commission like to see data from the fridge? Suggestion June/July.
3. Peaceful Valley Permaculture
  • This long-term project is at the whim of mother nature. Here are updates, and the extension request, from Thaddeus Cates who is spearheading the project:
    • December 2024 update:
      • The project has been ongoing since the spring and I have been busy spreading lots of new soil, compost, mulch/wood chip.
      • With the rainy season being as dry as it was, we couldn't get a a lot of the new plants to get going, but had some success with the native seeds. It may take until next year before we really start seeing changes but after all of the soil remediation efforts, I do believe the next spring will produce fantastic results.
    • February 2025 update:
      • Much has been done at the peaceful valley permaculture project this year, but we have little to show for it. Our dry summer last year and dry winter this year has made showing real progress close to impossible. This site does not have running water, so everything has been trucked in. But our seeds and starts just haven't taken off without natural moisture.  Although I've continued to spread soil amendments, seeds, transplants and literal tons of ground cover etc It's hasn't been enough without water. I had originally made request through Pat McGervy at the forest service to have runoff directed to this lot but there's nothing to runoff. I had reached out several times to the country club to see if we could use water from the ponds but there appears to be some sanitation issues there. We really need an extension for this. We're at the mercy of the weather.
      • I believe this is another case of wanting to see additional results before wrapping up the final grant report and presentation. How long does the Commission want to wait for data on the grant?
