TITLE:

An Update on the Progress of the 2016 Snowplay Taskforce

DESIRED OUTCOME:

Staff will provide an update on the recent work of the multi-jurisdictional Snowplay Taskforce in preparation of the upcoming 2016-2017 snow season.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The snowplay task force has been meeting regularly since April to discuss the challenges the community faces during peak snowplay times, namely holiday weekends with fresh snowfall, and to strategize ways to mitigate those challenges. This multi-jurisdictional team had representation from federal, state, and local governments, public safety, economic development partners, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). Efforts this year focused on improving messaging that is distributed throughout the state to encourage appropriate planning when visiting the area and safe behaviors once visitors arrive. The group also worked to update the Snowplay Map distributed by the CVB to include additional snowplay options, such as local Flagstaff parks, to attempt to spread the distribution of those looking to play in the snow to more areas than the Highway 180 corridor.
