10.E.
City Council Meeting - FINAL
Meeting Date:
01/17/2017
From:
Elizabeth A. Burke, City Clerk

TITLE:

Consideration of Creation of a Commission on Women's Issues.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Council direction

Executive Summary:

On September 20, 2016, then-Councilmember Evans presented a FAIR item to the Council to create a Commission on Women’s Issues to address those issues facing women in our community today.  Council provided the necessary support to move forward in the creation of the Women's Commission.

During her work with staff to prepare for the follow up meeting with Council where Council would actually create the new Commission, Mayor Evans indicated an interest to first tap the current Diversity Awareness Commission on the matter, the thought being that the span of the Diversity Awareness Commission's scope is broad enough to initially take on the topic of social equality among women in today’s society.  It is thought that through this process should the Diversity Awareness Commission find that a separate commission dedicated to women’s rights and social equality be warranted, it would make that recommendation to the City Council, creating the foundation upon which to create such a commission.

Respecting the fact that the matter already received support by the Council to take the next steps in creating the Commission, and realizing this slight deviation in that course, Mayor Evans wanted to double back with the Council to make sure everyone was one the same page.
