TITLE:

Indigenous Community Forum Update

DESIRED OUTCOME:

For information only.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Indigenous Community Forum began in response to a proposal in 2015 for the City of Flagstaff to declare Indigenous Peoples' Day in October. City Council held a discussion about organizing a series of input sessions to engage Flagstaff's Indigenous community. A working group of community members became known as The Indigenous Circle of Flagstaff (ICF).

The ICF proposed a series of Forums as a venue for Indigenous community members to speak about their challenges and needs, as well their hopes, ideas, and contributions, around vital topics of concern; and for the City of Flagstaff to listen. These forums would provide a basis for an action plan for the City leading to improved practices and policies. These would be initial steps in building a better, more positive and dynamic relationship between the City and the Indigenous people who continue to sustain it - a relationship that would improve life for every citizen of Flagstaff.

The six forums address the following topics: Youth and Education, Homelessness, Our Elders, Indigenous Business and Economic Development, Police and Criminal Justice and Environmental Justice. Together the ICF and City of Flagstaff staff have worked together to plan, prepare and promote the forums to the general public. Tonight we will hear the outcomes of the first four forums that have occurred.
