TITLE:
Creative Flagstaff (formerly known as Flagstaff Arts Council) Annual Update
DESIRED OUTCOME:
Presentation by the Creative Flagstaff Director, discuss and provide feedback.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City of Flagstaff contracts with Flagstaff Arts Council (DBA Creative Flagstaff, CF) to be the City’s lead agency for art, science, and culture nonprofit groups as well as to administer related grant programs. CF is an independent nonprofit agency partially funded by the Bed, Board, and Beverage (BBB) Arts & Sciences Fund. Funding derives from a local 2% transaction privilege tax imposed on gross revenues of hotels, restaurants and bars in Flagstaff ("the BBB tax"), that is distributed per the Flagstaff City Code, Chapter 3-06 Hospitality Industry Revenues.
Annually, CF reports to the City Council regarding their efforts under the contract. This year’s update will include an overview of the organization’s new strategic plan which was completed with extensive public involvement, an overview of its grant programs, and an introduction to new programs including Dark Sky Arts & Ideas Festival, Responsive Training, and the Digital Resource Center at Coconino Center for the Arts.
Since CF last presented to Council in November 2020, the allocation of the City's BBB resources under the contract with CF provided 35 organizations with 48 grants totaling $399,750 including General Operating Support ($305,000), Project ($55,000), and a special COVID Collaboration grant program ($39,750). CF receives 15% of the grant amount (~$59,963) for managing grant programs and an additional fee (~$39,000) for acting as the City’s local arts, culture, and science agency. The final slides in the attached presentation include information on all grant awards beginning with July 2021.
