Observatory Mesa Natural Area Renaming Consideration

Discussion Item. Open Spaces Commissioners will share information and thoughts on the pros/cons of renaming the Observatory Mesa Natural Area. This is a potential decision item. The Open Spaces Commission can elect to make a recommendation during this meeting or postpone a decision to a later meeting.  

The Open Spaces Commission is considering a formal name change for the Observatory Mesa Natural Area to better reflect its conservation status and ensure consistency within City code and public communications. The discussion will weigh the pros and cons of renaming the site, including the need to update signage, websites, and internal documents such as management plans. Notably, Observatory Mesa is one of only two City-owned open space parcels acquired from the State with a conservation easement, the other being Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve. Given their similar acquisition history and legal protections, renaming the site to Observatory Mesa Natural Preserve would align with the naming convention used for Picture Canyon and more accurately represent its preserved status.
