Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment

  MISSION STATEMENT
 
A commission to foster support, respect, awareness and appreciation of diversity among all citizens of Flagstaff.
 
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
 
The Commission on Diversity Awareness humbly acknowledges the ancestral homelands of this area's Indigenous nations and original stewards. These lands, still inhabited by Native descendants, border mountains sacred to Indigenous peoples. We honor them, their legacies, their traditions, and their continued contributions. We celebrate their past, present, and future generations who will forever know this place as home.

  1. Chair Wegwert will explain this new section of the agenda. 
  2. Vice Chair Toner and Commissioner Pino's reappointments.  
  3. The Diversity Survey has been posted on the Commission of Diversity Awareness webpage

  5. The Indigenous Commission meetings: first Wednesday of each month at 11am – 1pm

Public Comment

The Commission cannot act upon items presented during the Public Participation portion of the Agenda. Individual Commission members may ask questions of the public but are prohibited by the Open Meeting Law from discussion or considering the item among themselves until the item is officially placed on the Agenda. Each public comment or presentation will be limited to five (5) minutes.

Discuss the length of the CODA Regular Meetings. 
Discuss and vote on moving the meeting start time.

Proclamations Work Group Update 
 
  • Mental Health Awareness – (May) Confirmed on the May 3rd Council agenda Review and approve during the CODA April meeting
  • Asian American and Pacific Islander (May) - Review and approve during the CODA April meeting
    • Review and approve the draft Proclamation to be sent to Mayor Deasy.

Climate Advisory Groups

To bring more local voices into climate action and decision making, the Sustainability Office is initiating Climate Advisory Groups. We are reaching out to our Commissions and Committees to ask for the opportunity to give a short presentation to provide information and build capacity for the advisory groups. 
 
B.
MetroPlan: Stride Forward Regional Transportation Plan update
David Wessel, MetroPlan Planning Manager
Stride Forward Regional Transportation Plan.  Stride Forward will look 20-25 years into the future at transportation needs and opportunities through the lens of today's challenges: climate change, equity, housing.  MetroPlan's members include the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona Department of Transportation, Mountain Line and NAU. Our past plans have been instrumental in the development and passage of key transportation taxes.

Recommendations to Council (updates and future items)

Equitable Restroom Recommendation 
 
Listen to an update from the Staff Liaison and discuss any changes to the current recommendation.

Current Commission Priorities

Discuss the opportunity to create a workgroup, draft recommendations or follow up for consideration or wait until the City Staff are ready to work on this.

Pending follow up from the High School group on when to send the Commissions recommendation to Council.

C.
Regional Plan (April)
Jordan Hollinger - Associate Planner, Comprehensive Planning, City of Flagstaff
The new website provides background information about what the plan is and the process for updating it. 

 
 
D.
Flagstaff Public Libraries Anti-racism Committee (April) 
Felicia Fiedler - Discuss collaborating with the Diversity Commission and the Flagstaff Public Libraries Anti racism committee to talk about how we can better collaborate and talk about the best practices that they have come up with.
